A care dwelling that fosters connections between residents and the broader group has been topped the UK’s greatest new constructing.
A contemporary reimagining of a standard almshouse, Appleby Blue in Bermondsey, south London, received the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling prize on Thursday evening.
That includes 59 rent-capped residences, a group centre and rooftop gardens, the property tackles the dual problems with loneliness and a scarcity of inexpensive housing for aged folks. It was designed by Witherford Watson Mann Architects for United St Saviour’s Charity, a nonprofit that goals to foster group cohesion.
